She may appear just a clotheshorse dishing advice on fashion and image, but Project SuperStar judge Dawn Yip is really a sharp-eyed headhunter for Singapore’s next SuperStar!

Said the former Talentime winner regarding what SuperStar qualities the contestants should have, “The girls should have a lovable image, while the guys should concentrate on image and singing.”

Lo and behold, the guru’s words came true in the Quarter-Finals 4 results show last night!

Pretty and saccharine-sweet girls Candyce Toh Hwei Ping and Silver Ang Zi Hui sashayed into the Semi-Finals, while playing the impeccably dressed Prince Charming has indeed worked well for the tall Chia Wei Choong. Similarly, although Tan Wei Lian may not be the best singer in the competition, his magical knack for touching the viewers’ hearts and even drawing a tear or two placed him safe in the next round.

But even for ousted contestants Macy Guo Meixi and Sebastian Leong Wai Keong, the morning after their elimination wasn’t a dreary one with proverbial rain clouds hanging over them. They bantered, they laughed and simply breezed through the multiple interviews with the press this morning.

“There’s still the revival round,” 18-year-old Ah Boy Wai Keong stressed. He may feel the game ain’t over yet for him, but for Macy, the revival competition is really just a last chance for her to perform for her family and supporters, not an attempt to fulfill a starry dream.

“It’s really a blessing to be here. Before yesterday, I thought, go to the revival round means die already. But not to be so negative, I’ll still give it my best shot. I’ve already chosen a song, and through it, I hope to tell my supporters how I feel,” Macy smiled, flashing her cute dimples.

Mr Misunderstood?

Truth be told, Hagen didn't give off a good first impression from the first time we talked a couple of months ago. Then, he was cocky and very self-confident. Now, he’s still as evasive and wishy-washy at answering reporters’ questions, and often needs prompting before continuing. “I don’t know yeh” remains one of his favourite phrases.

But today, the Hagen I saw was muted, very sensitive and unhappy. After witnessing him cry painfully during our interview at the many gossips and unpleasant events surrounding him, I did feel an ounce of sympathy for him. Perhaps he’s not that disagreeable at heart, but his words and action unintentionally and inadvertently offend some people.

Here’s some of the common complaints against the man, and what he said in reply.
The Grudge: He’s rude and can’t accept criticisms from judge Xu Huanliang. (Watch the video here)
Hagen says: Nobody told me that. (It’s on the Internet forums.) I’ve already stopped reading the online postings. If I become angry, I’ll be providing a chance for those few people to criticize me again. That’s only the opinion of some people. I feel if I’m really rude, you can ask the auntie in the canteen. People who come into actual contact with me will know. Did you feel I was impolite? (Honestly, yes.) Ok… I didn’t feel so. Everything I do is under scrutiny. If I’m quiet, people say I’m a hypocrite. If I say something, people say it’s wrong too. What am I supposed to do?

The Grudge: He’s so sissy.
Hagen says: If they want to say, I’ll let them be. This is me. If fashion is sissy, then everyone don’t (sic) go cut hair. If looking fashionable is a wrong thing, then everyone don’t (sic) wear nice clothes. These are just individual impressions of people.

The Grudge: He’s so cocky for saying that if he doesn’t win Project SuperStar, it’s because Singapore doesn’t know what a SuperStar is.
Hagen says: I realize one really has to think very carefully before he speaks if he’s in the limelight. Before I wrote that comment in the questionnaire form, the person-in-charge asked me to write something interesting and that they’ve never heard of before. I was out of my mind. I wrote that because I thought it was only a game and decided to write something opposite of what I was thinking. (See what he wrote here)

Hagen’s interview had to be ended prematurely when he was overwhelmed by his emotions and his lips trembled while he valiantly fought back his tears. He politely asked us to switch off our recorder, but continued to pour his grievances and misunderstandings to us. Like he admitted in his video trailer, Hagen is indeed a very emotional person.

While Hagen seemed so perturbed by the gossips that he’s considering giving up the competition, 18-year-old Leong Wai Keong is all out to win the Revival Round!

“Even though I’m out, I won’t give up; I’ll do my best in the next round!” Ah Boy said optimistically. “I’ve always selected songs by older singers, and like the judges said, I’m very young. So now I’ll look into songs by younger singers, like Zhang Dongliang and Energy.”

Wai Keong, whose idol is Hong Kong veteran Andy Lau, gives the impression that there’s an ah pek hiding somewhere in his young body. His thinking and beliefs are pretty mature (“If I’m out, it’s because I wasn’t up to par. There’s no point crying. I just need to work harder; only hard work will reap in rewards,” he said), but once in a while, the little boy comes out to play, like when we asked…

Q: How many people in your family voted for you this time round?
Wai Keong: My mother, my father, my eldest sister, my eldest sister’s husband, my second sister, her boyfriend, my …

Leon Lim Yu Zhi, Hoh Wei Jian, Leong Wai Keong and Hagen Tan Meng Qi will go to the Revival Round on July 20. Macy Guo Meixi, Chanel Pang Jing Ying, Lai Li Jun and Kelly Poon Kar Lai will go to the Revival Round on July 21. One male and one female contestant will be voted into the Semi-Finals.
